Hi Guys,
I was so very inspired by Yvon's Hind build thread here that I've decided to scratch build a 1/4 scale Jetranger, a Longranger and a 407.

The fueslages are all glassed up at this point, should start applying the panel lines and rivets soon.

Hi Guys,
Here's a progress photo from today. I glassed the plugs for the "bubble" windshield and "bubble" chin windows. These will be used later on to vacuum form the parts.

Hey Guys,
Here's a quick progress shot of the bubble chin window plug. I'm still dry sanding to get it smooth then move onto wetsanding. You're looking straight on from the front. The bubble tapers to less of a bubble as you move forward and aft.

Nice build photos! Do you have any templates for the 206B form you could email as I am artistically challenged?

Hi Guys,
Here's the current state of all the parts. There's alot of work laying there...hadn't realized it until I saw all the parts spread out.
Adding all the details is the next step.
Until next time,
George

Hi guys,
All the main parts (except for the main bodies) have been sprayed with high gloss and have been installed in the parting boards.
The parts are inserted exactly half way into the cut outs, clay is then pushed into the gap to prevent resin from dripping down the side. The excess clay is cleaned off resulting in a nice clean parting line.
The plugs are held in place with Popsicle sticks which have been hot glued to the sides from underneath giving support and preventing the plugs from moving around while waxing and during lay-up of the glass layers.
First wax then PVA is applied to prevent the next layers from sticking and ruining your day.
After the tooling gelcoat was applied, layers of veil where individually applied. Veil is used to prevent print thru of the cloth pattern to the gelcoat. It also makes for a nice first layer void of any air bubbles. When parts are pulled there's a good chance the gelcoat would break off at the air bubble locations....bad, bad, bad.
And after the resin was applied to each of the layers this is what you are left with,... air bubble free!
This is veil, it's very fine and sort of desolves in the resin, so you put it down and leave it. No chance to re-position it.
First layers have "kicked" so one layer of mat goes on. This process will slowly continue with an end result of 6 layers to create a strong mold.
Here the halves separated from the parting board. A simple clean up of the dried PVA and clay residue and then I the process starts all over again...wax, PVA, gelcoat, layers...fun...fun.
And this is the end result....a nice shiny mold!
The details reproduce nicely.
After fully curing the insides will get polished to a mirror like finish.
Until next time,
George

I completed another mold, this time it's for the 206L Horizontal Stabilizer.
We again wait for it to fully cure before polishing the inside to a "grade A" finish.

I started on some of the window masking.
One of the areas I wanted to reproduce correctly was the relationship of some details to the center line of the fuselage. Other then the windshield, the battery box door and chin windows are not centered as one would think, they are in fact off center to the right.
I've reproduced this detail instead of centering everything with respects to the center line. That's the great thing about working in this scale, a detail like this is worth the effort.
Here's the vent grills just stuck on with tape to see how it looks. Looks like I have the angles correct.
Until next time,
George

Hi Guys,
The high build primer has been applied and the masking tape removed reviling a recessed area, to still be lightly sanded. The window openings will be cut out a bit smaller then this area allowing for a window attachment point.
Doors will be cut out along the lines then an inside doubler will be installed acting as a door jam.
That's it for now,
George

Thanks Mike, great to be back!
I have the 407 window masking completed, moving onto the rivets and raised panel lines.
Here's a size comparison of an XCell 60 with the 206B Jet Ranger plug.

Hi Guys,
I've switched to epoxy for the molds, much easier to work with.
Here's a few progress photos of the new molds.
Side two for the tail boom mold
407 fin molds complete.
And the 407 horizontal and vertical stabilizer molds complete.
I'm really pleased with the results, all the panel line and rivet details came out perfect with no loss of detail.
Until next time,
George
