Mike-
I am currently flying a Raptor 30 w/ 32 OS-SX and a GY 401 working a Futaba 9254 (transmitter is JR 8103) --
My question is I currently run the JR 1400 Mah battery packs 4.8 volt (4 cell packs) -- I have spoken to people that are running the larger 6.0 (5 cell) battery packs with a regulator in line to lower the voltage down. What I am learning is if one cell fails on the 4.8 pack my voltage fails, drops below flyable limits! Now with the 6.0 five cell pack with a regulator, I could technically lose a cell and still be "above" the helo's required voltage I need to keep the helo from self destructing..(Crash 101)
I am interested in your input sir, not the "A" typical Helo counter talk on the conversion to the five cell vs. four cell..
Thank you for your time to review this question!

...depending on whether the cell fails in open or closed mode.

DT,
Go to using Lithium Ion Batteries. You will be supplying 7.4 volts plus to the regulator. The Li-Ion packs that are 4 cell and wired redundant. You can lose a cell and still fly. The batteries I am refering are the Duralites and the Fromeco Peerless.
They are a little more expensive than Nicads or Nimh. But well worth the price difference to me.
4000 mah Li-Ion pack only weighs 6.5 ozs.

Help me out here, "If" it fails in the closed mode (be it 4.8 or 6.0) -- IF i understand what your saying, then the system is technically shorted out... I hope I am explaining it right...

DT,
Yes on a 5 cell ( 6 volt) pack. If a cell fails closed you would then have basically a 4 cell pack and the failed closed cell would continue the series connection.
If the cell failed open, then there is nothing to make up the connection, so there would be no power to anything.

David,I read this in another forum. Not sure what to think of those batteries though.

I've had 2 packs of 4000 from duralite failed after 4 and 6 charges.
the voltage dropped by 2 volts after only one flight! to top that off, the voltage regulator started to go nuts. it shown 5.1v and after 1 hour or so it show 5.4v. i contacted duralites and they told me that cause i'm not registered at their costumer data bank, i cant get a warranty. after some emails, they said that they will give me a 1/2 of what i paid for, and that i should pay another half to get new equipment. my response was "thanks but no thanks" and i went ahead and bought me the Arizona regulator and the peerless pack. NO PROBLEM SINCE! i love the fromeco products.
Itsindilas: i currently use in my millennium 2S lipo pack. i use the Tanic Pack 3650 20C. works great and loaded with power!

AS with any product. There is always going to be someone that is not pleased.
Don't know if it means much to you. But some of the top heli and airplane pilots in the world use Duralite batteries. So they trust there models to them when they are in competition.

David,
I just wanted to see if anyone else had any problems with these batteries. Doesnt mean I will not get them. I realize some fliers will like them and others will not. As with most products out there everyone has there opinion.Just checking to see if anyone else had a similar problem,or this was just a one incedent case. I see no one else is complaining about them.I am out of date on what products are good and what is just so,so. Taking all the information in and will decide. Thanks for your reply.Yes it does matter to me who is using them too.
