Finally, the Caliber 5 is in house, now what??
I need servos, gyro and receiver. Beeing a novice i seek advice from experienced fellows. Is hitech a good alternative? The machine looks great and deserve the best, really looking forward to bring it in the air.

What brands are available in your area? All the major manufacturers are good. Futaba, JR, Airtronics/Sanwa, Hitec and Multiplex, etc. For a gyro I would recommend the Futaba GY401 and a 9254 servo or the JR 500T (is that the 490T in Europe?) Good luck with it. Let us know your initial impressions, I am curious.

Welcome to the forum by the way. You're in great company.

I recieved a new Cal 5 for xmas. I really like the design, and seems lighter than my Sceadu 50. Initially when I was breaking in the engine it was very smooth. After break in it started fuel foaming, and I'm having a hard time tracking it down. I balanced the main rotor head with the blades, tail assembly clutch and fan. Any input would be apreciated. As it started off smooth and then started you should check your:

engine tuning
Loose nuts bolts
Fuel
clutch/engine alinement

And see what happens.

Thanks Rudy. Sorry its been a while since I've checked back. It's engine break-in was the culprit. As it breaks in it is getting smoother. I forgot to mention that its an Enya 50ss. They take a long time to break-in. The last experience I had with an Enya was in the early nineties, with a 35ss and forgot how long it took. Tom

Hey, I'm just checking in to see if anyone is flying their Cal 5. Its pretty cold here in NJ and I still managed to fly about a gallon since the new year. I went to my clubs field yesterday and met a couple guys there, but that didn't last long. Its hard to fly when you can't feel your fingers.......

I wouldn't try to fly much in this weather. It is cold and the wind is gusting at a pretty decent clip here in New York. I actually thought about it for a brief second when I went outside this morning and remembered my last try a few weeks ago and scuttled the idea.

It was freezing today here in NJ! I was thinking of flying sometime this week, but if this keeps up forget about it. I have the counter gear upgrade installed and want to really fly a gallon or so to check it out. Tom

Okay. I took out two helicopters yesterday thinking it was a bit "warmer" without the biting wind chill gusts. I managed to fly one and then couldn't get the other one started since the cold weather had an adverse reaction on my starter battery in my flight box, it slowly died. I knew I should have stayed at home and followed my instinct.

Caliber 5 in house

Sorry to here about your problems at the field. I managed to get to the the field to test out the cal 5 with the counter gear upgrade and for the first tank had it flying nicely. The second tank is a different story: I richened it up some more because of the sub 15F degree temps and proceeded to take a flight, after a couple of minutes the engine proceeded to bounce backward because of my overly rich engine setting. I had to auto and managed a light crash. I broke the main grips and bent the spindle because I scrubbed most of the headspeed in the auto. I hope to be flying again today. Tom

The year still hasn't been good to me. LOL I crashed my Hirobo Schweizer 300 last weekend. Nice huh? Dumb thumbs on one of those wickedly, windy days. The wind just gusted to over 30 mph suddenly on one of my fly bys and I didn't react "correctly". Of course you know with those scale thingys (even the sport ones) parts are an arm an a pe-is. The scale struts alone were almost $40 USD.

I think I should just lay low for the rest of the Winter.

Crashing stinks on ice. No pun intended. But what can you do? Save flying that nice scale heli for nice calm mornings before the crowd gets to your field, and fly the pod and boom in the iffy weather and wind. Don't hang it up for the winter, just think how much improved the guys will think you are in the spring. I just finished fixing my Cal 5 and changed some parts for improvement, a new spindle, main mast, two used grips, an aluminum Cal 4 swash used, and the updated tail case also from a cal 4. I like the idea that alot of the parts from the kyosho line interchange with each other as I was able to get a crashed cal 4 airframe cheap a couple of weeks ago. It already saved me some money as well as upgraded my heli too. Tom

Where exactly do you purchase your Kyosho Caliber parts? Are they easy to come by? Is there ever a shortage or backorder on them?

Years ago I use to have a terrible time getting spare parts for my Concepts and my Nexus. That was before Kyosho America arrived. I gave up trying the newer models afterwards.

I have been using http://www.rcheliworkz.com/ lately and they have everything I've needed, at a competetive price. I think the owners name is Chris, a nice quy and pretty much a heli enthusiast. Give them a try. I think I am putting the cal 5 away for the winter. I've got an Enya 50 in it and CAN NOT get it tuned. I don't know whats up, Me or the engine. It seems I get it close and can't get it any better. I have probably 4 or 5 gallons of fuel through it and still not right. I wonder since its an old design if it is made to be broken in with castor instead of synthetic. I don't know, I've had so much fun with my enya 35, I'd hate to scrap it. What do you think? Tom

I couldn't do it. Put it away for the winter that is. I changed the pitch curve so there was only negetive pitch from the radio and proceeded to breakin the engine on the ground in the heli. I didn't want to take it out and put a prop on it and do it that way. I have it running pretty good now, but I think it needs some flying to get broken in the rest of the way. I think I'll take it along with my Sceadu to my club field tomorrow. I think the weather is going to be decent tomorrow. Tom

I haven't had any experience with the Enya engines. They can't be bad though as they have been around for many years and I haven't heard anything bad about them. You can break in most helicopter engines in the helicopter itself. Just run it rich for a few tanks and then lean it out to its ideal setting where it doesn't sound like it is four stroking.

I am still flying through the cold temperatures. On the extreme days (like this coming Sunday) I will stay home. Yesterday was nice even though my hands got a little numb after a few hours. I think 45 degrees fahrenheit is just about ideal for me. The 30's are a problem.

I took some time yesterday to go the the hobby shop and bought a case of Cool Power. They have been out for weeks due to the Winter and not wanting to sotck up when no one is flying. I am set for the next few months ... well maybe until mid Spring if the weather stays this way.

I'm glad to hear your flying. I tried to get out today, but couldn't. I think tomorrow is going to be real cold and windy, I think like 30mph gusts. Maybe it'll be nicer mid week. The Enya engines aren't like OS, They take a long time to get broken in. The importer told me that they are a hand lapped piston and sleave? Any way it takes like three hours of running to get it running smooth with max power. I've had alot of luck with a enya 35 thats about 15 years old or more, with countless gallons of fuel through it. It never misses a beat and is smooth as silk. I'm no 3D pilot so a Hyper is just overkill to me. Tom
