Hi DRPKE, According to AMA section 3.2.1. all transmitters sold after 3/1/93 are legal. Only A.M. transmitters sold new prior to that date are suspect. They may or may not be legal. All F.M. are narrow band, and according to AMA. are legal. hope that helps. jack hall

Radios manufactured after a certain date (I wish I could tell you the exact date... 1992-ish?) are legal. To transmit with a radio manufactured prior to that magic date, it must be re-certified. Radios that have been re-certified should have a gold sticker on the back to indicate that. You'd probably have to send it back to the manufacturer to get it certified if it needs it. It's possible that some radios -cannot- be certified in their present form because their electronics can't be adjusted enough to meet current emissions standards. (they'd require circuit modification, which would probably exceed the value of the radio) But to make a long story short, if it's old enough to be illegal, it's definitely not computerized. Using a non-computerized radio (no mixes!) with a heli is probably a REAL bad idea.

If it has a gold sticker on it, it's legal. If not, it's not a narrow-band radio, and it's not kosher!

Virtual1 makes a good point about the worthiness of a noncomputerized radio. Not to lessen the complexity of planks but I would not use it to fly a heli.Butch R

That is correct, new radios no longer have the gold stickers. I just assumed (shouldn't do that!) that it was an older radio he was referring to, in which case, the gold sticker thing would still apply.

I'm a CD with the AMA, they sent out a letter stating the gold sticker program time frame has expired. New radio's no longer have gold stickers.

One other thing to look for is a Dual-Conversion receiver. If it has one it is a modern radio that should accept any of the new channel crystals. It it’s not Dual-conversion you asking for interference problems from pagers.

ITS NOT ILLEGAL TILL YOU GET CAUGHT!!!! i was looking to buy a heli off ebay last year that came with an old FG futaba gold series, I asked him if it had a recent sticker, it did not, when i told him it was illegal to you use it he laughed at me!
i hear its a hefty fine if you get busted..$5000 or so. It almost makes it worth it to buy a new 9Z eh???

The FCC has really gotten lax in the past 10 yrs with "general public" enforcement, check out their web site for their enforcement log. It's almost funny how much they let people get away with before hitting them up with fines. I'd personally prefer the old approach of "show up out of nowhere, confiscate equipment, and start writing fines". An old transmitter that's kicking out nasty harmonics or bleeding across channels is a hazard to any heli in the air on the same band. So, it's the big guys with the helis planted in the ground, rolling up their sleeves and slowly walking toward you that you should be thinking about.
