I know somebody is going to call me crazy for this, but would it at all be possible to use average acrylic paint, the type you buy at craft and art stores to be used on canvas to paint a fiberglass canopy?
Its more important for me to get my machine flying instead of buying a whole airbrushing set to paint it, and I have much more experience with brushes than airbrushes and spray paint.
Acrylic paint is basically plastic, and is a pretty tough plastic to destroy with average house hold cleaners, but I know for sure that nitro will destroy my paint job. Do you guys think I could spray some real hobby level fuel proof clear coat over the paint to protect and give it a glossy look?
I just tryed rubbing nitro on an unpreped peice of fiberglass resin, and it came off pretty easily, if I want this to work out, ill have to spray clear coat or something over it to chemical proof it.

Yes it will go on nicely on the fibreglass canopy. It doesn't like oil so please make sure that you wash off any mold release oils thorougly. You can clear coat it as well. As you are aware the alcohol from the fuel will make short order of the paint so do a good job sealing it. There are also acrylic agents that you can add to the paint that will make it dry slowly so that you can work on it a little longer ... Acrylic paints dry very quickly. You can get some beautiful colours from the acrylic paints. Cadmium Blue was always one of my favourites. Good Luck Z!

Cadnium blue and titanium white do go together. I wouldnt have the slightest problem using my canopy as a canvas, I am also an advanced art student  . Acrylic does dry very fast and thats one of the reasons why I want to use it, I cant stand waiting over night for spray paint to dry then tapeing and cutting masking tape.
Im not sure about preping a fiberglass canopy, my art teacher would probably just tell me to pour a gallon of gesso on it (equivilent to primer) but this IS going to be used on a helicopter so I want to keep the weight down. Could I start primming it now by rubbing it down with alcohol then sanding it with ultra fine sandpaper and fill in the small gaps in the actual fiberglass with thin CA?

Sorry about not responding sooner Zio.
You don't need to apply the gesso. Sand it lightly (for some "tooth" adhesion) and wash it with warm soapy water. What is nice is that it is flexible so it will not crack and peel.

Alright Ill give it a try when I get my current projects done, I have to finish a painting and a banner for the city, which will take a month or so. Then I can try to paint the canopy. Only thing is, I doubt any one will know what it is. I glued all of my grommets in so Ill have to pay attention to those.
Got any ideas for what type or brand of clear coat I should use?

Any of the clear coat paints approved for nitro model use will do the job nicely. Try TopFlite LustreKote Clear Spray, it comes in a 10 oz. can and dries quickly as well. Do a test first and spray a very small part of the canopy. I'm quite sure that the acrylic paint will not react with the clear coat paint but better safe than sorry I always say. Spray on several lights coats instead of one heavy coat and wait for each to dry before applying another.

Should I lightly sand the finished paint job? I mean LIGHTLY sand, with that ultra fine grain sand paper that feels more like a plastic peice of paper then apply clear coat?

Not even lightly ... no. Acrylic paints do not like being sanded, you could ruin the whole finish since it is soft and pliable when dry. Just clear coat your art when you're done. Good luck and let us see what you've created when you're finished.

Zio,
On my machine I have now. I remember spraying the canopy with an automotive clear coat with a hardener in it. To this day,10yrs later its still shinny and no paint missing from it. Not sure whats out there these days,but I bought a fusealage and will be spray painting it soon and then clear coating it with the automotive clear coat spray.

Its works for me.And my machine has it on it. A pint will do the trick, with a only one layer on it.

I finished my project for the city so I should be able to get the canopy in art in 3 weeks..but winter break might force me to wait until january to start.

Alright, I started my next project which is going to take probably till winter break then I can start the P max in January.
Problem is, I dont think I have any "free project" slots availible. I might have to put some flying tiger eyes and sharks mouth on it so it would work as this other slot thing.
I lost the picture of what I was going to do , but it was one of those Tornados, with a half tiger and half "normal" paint job.
