DT,

Go to using Lithium Ion Batteries. You will be supplying 7.4 volts plus to the regulator. The Li-Ion packs that are 4 cell and wired redundant. You can lose a cell and still fly. The batteries I am refering are the Duralites and the Fromeco Peerless.
They are a little more expensive than Nicads or Nimh. But well worth the price difference to me.
4000 mah Li-Ion pack only weighs 6.5 ozs.
