I have a used Tsurugi which had served me very well over the years. Recently it had developed some problems which i am unable to solve (Note. The configurations were not changed since the last flight). When i turn the starter (with the correct orientation and connections), the whole rotor wants to turn as well. It was as if the whole rotor is now 'connected' to the starter shaft. Could it be a problem with the clutch or the 1-way bearing on the main gear? Is it possible for the clutch shoes to have somehow broke and now is stuck against the clutch bell? If I turn it in the opposite direction, the clutch doesnt engage. I have 2 Nexus and a Shuttle which when i turn the starter cone/shaft slowly, the clutch stays disengaged. I couldnt take apart the heli cause it is in a almost_epoxied_shut Jetranger fuselage body :-( . I think i am gonna have to cut open the fuze soon. |

Wow! It sounds like the clutch shoes could have spread out enough to engage the clutch bell and it is not disengaging. I doubt the shoes have broken. I know you will hate to do this but you will have to go into that lovely fuselage and remove the mechanics to get to the clutch bell. You may have to re-line the clutch bell also. When was the last time you actually serviced it? By the way....WELCOME!

Thank you for the quick reply. Yeah, kinda suspect the shoes actually. Ok, time to take out the dremel, Ouch!! When was the last time i serviced the heli? Well, I do the normal clean_the_heli_after_flight and oil the bearings routine. The same goes to my other helis/planes and cars (but better not mention planes nor cars in this forum, might get flamed! ). Since it is a fuselage,it doesnt really get dirty much. There is a healthy following of people flying R/C helis and planes(oops) here in Malaysia. The current trend seems to be towards electric helis and planes(really, the last one!!). Yup, definitely enjoying this forum now.. Thanks again. sllim

 You should always have good access to the mechanics for general maintenance though.
If you have to get the Dremel out....ouch.

Hello everyone, Just an update. I have since opened up (and therefore destroyed) the fuselage to gain access to the engine and clutch. Apparently the cause of my troubles is that the conrod had snapped and the engine shaft is free to rotate without any sign of compression. I remembered hearing a metallic snapping sound just prior to my troubles months ago. But i still couldn't understanding why the clutch would stay engaged(the clutch shoes and clutch lining looks fine). Anyways, i am now waiting for a replacement part (or engine). At the mean time, i will be flying my Shuttle .

Thank you very much for following up and updating us. Next time leave some kind of access hatch where you will be sure that you will not have to destroy your fuselage just to get to the mechanics. Good Luck with everything.
